Every year, between 21.5 and 26 kg/inhabitant of textile pieces are consumed in Spain, 30% of which corresponds to home textile products. Of this amount, only 11% is collected, and only 1% is recycled and converted into new products. In the specific case of carpets and rugs, approximately 1.6 million tons are incinerated or landfilled yearly in the European Union.
The LONG LIFE TEXTILES project arose from the need to respond to the low recyclability of the household textile sector, and its main objective is to contribute to reducing the environmental and social impact of this sector.
Thus, it is an industrial research project that aims to generate evidence for the design, development, and prototyping of a model to extend the useful life of home textile products, ensuring traceability and transparency throughout their life cycle.
Design will be the project's backbone as a tool for research and innovation, testing the proposed solutions, iterating, improving and redesigning them when necessary. The design will be an integral element in the whole system and will be used to prototype the final service and define user interaction.
The main expected results of the project are the development of a proposal for a traceability and transparency model with technological and communication integration, which integrates an app that allows testing access to detailed information about the product. A carbon footprint analysis report of the proposed model will also be carried out. The project participants will generate a prototype of the model in a digital and physical environment.
Long Life Textiles is led by Barcelona Centre deDisseny, and co-lead by MODACC, Inèdit, Nucreatives, Nanimarquina and Retexcycle.
The project is funded by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism through the support programme of Agrupaciones Empresariales Innovadoras.
